Measurement method

The Dekati ELPI®+ is perfectly suited for the measurement of particle number concentration and size distribution of tyre wear emissions. With a frequency of 10 Hz, rapid changes in these measured variables can also be recorded in real time – in 14, with the High-Resolution version even in up to 500 size classes.
Since the ELPI®+ uses a cascade impactor for size classification, the collected particle fractions can be analyzed using chemical analytical or electromicroscopic methods (SEM / TEM). This enables, for example, statements to be made about which size fractions are more likely to come from tyre wear and which originate from road wear.

Description

Tyre wear emissions have become increasingly important as they can have a significant impact not only on the environment, but also on the performance of tyres and therefore the vehicle itself. Particles are created in the interaction between tyres and roads, but can also be formed by evaporation when tyres are heated.

Due to varying particle formation processes, tyres emit particles in a wide range of sizes from a few nanometers to a few micrometers. Thus, a measuring device with a very wide particle size range is necessary for the analysis. The impactors and measuring devices from Dekati can cover a particle size range of 6 nm – 10 μm and are therefore very suitable.
