Fast forward particle ageing – The Dekati® Oxidation Flow Reactor is an oxidation flow reactor that shortens the formation of secondary aerosols (SA) to less than one minute.

Some atmospheric processes are lengthy. For example, the formation of secondary aerosols can take several days.

This is where the Dekati® oxidation flow reactor intervenes and shortens the process. The oxidation flow reactor creates a highly oxidative environment for the aerosol sample introduced. So the sample can thus “age” for three days over a period of 45 seconds. The reactor can be combined with, for example, Dekati® ‘s ELPI®+, which measures particle size distribution and concentration in real time.

How the DOFR™ works

The aerosol sample is transferred into a laminar flow and exposed to high-intensity UV radiation. According to the interaction of UVC radiation, water molecules and ozone in the reactor creates a highly oxidative space. The constant laminar flow also ensures minimal particle loss during the process.

Possible applications

Due to the short residence time of the sample in the device and the laminar flow profile inside, the Dekati® Oxidation Flow Reactor is ideally suited for research around secondary aerosols. It is also very well suited for PAM (Potential Aerosol Mass) measurements and can be used, for example, to measure transient emission sources such as engine exhaust emissions under different driving conditions.
