February 2020 – Oil detection on water surfaces with the LDI ROW

The ROW (Remote Optical Watcher) from Laser Diagnostic Instruments is an autonomously operating early detection system for oil spills on water surfaces.

The contamination of water through oil can have devastating consequences. For example, a large amount of oil in a sewage treatment plant can destroy its entire biology and cause immense damage. There are many incidents where damage and costs could have been minimized would the oil have been detected earlier.

In addition to this application, the ROW is suitable for monitoring in many other industries and sectors: harbor basins, boat fuel stations, waterworks, sewers, oil tank plants, refineries and petrochemical plants, chemical and steelworks, rainwater reservoirs, and much more.

The ROW recognizes oil films from a thickness of 1 µm and can be installed at a distance of 1-10 m from the water surface. The light-based system enables detection without contact with the water surface and thus offers the possibility of continuous low-maintenance operation – day and night, even under extreme external conditions. Depending on the area of application, the LDI ROW is available in either an aluminum or stainless steel version. There is even an ATEX-protected version available.
